Established by the World Wide Workshop in the spring of 2006, Globaloria is a social learning network for teaching young people (ages 10 and up) how to create educational webgames and interactive simulations. Globaloria has served over 7000 students and educators to date, and is presently serving over 3000 participants in four states: California, New York, Texas, and West Virginia; making Globaloria the first and the nation’s largest education innovation of its kind.
Globaloria is a rigorous turn-key instructional solution for STEM learning, comprising a year-long academic curriculum, game design and programming tutorials, game-content resources, and virtual support systems for educators and youth. Working independently and in small teams, young people drive the design process, taking an original idea to final game product. Globaloria is suitable for youth at all levels. No prior web design or programming skills are needed. Learning by doing, youth are educated in both technical and computational skills and in content knowledge that prepares them for college-level studies, as well as for digital citizenship and careers in the global knowledge economy.
Globaloria offers a comprehensive and structured professional development platform, training, and support system. It combines online and onsite training that elevates educators and facilitators (who are techie and non-techie) to mastering how to run effective blended-learning classes, integrating 1:1 computing with game-design and content studies in their learning environment. Support is provided in the form of summer training programs, monthly webinars, on-line resources, daily programming help desk, and bi-weekly check-ins by fellow educator-mentors.
Hailed by national education leaders as an innovative college-prep and STEM career-prep course, Globaloria is designed to cultivate engagement in learning and problem solving among all students, with a special emphasis on girls and technologically and economically underserved communities. Preliminary research indicates that Globaloria is increasing contemporary learning abilities and self-confidence among learners, and improving their academic performance on statewide tests that measure mastery of core subjects such as math, science, reading and writing.
